The BMW i4 replace-battery message is about the 12-volt battery. It’s not a warning that the drive pack is empty. A parked i4 at SoFi often fails the 12-volt, not the pack. The same thing happens in a downtown Los Angeles structure. The car can show plenty of range and still go fully dark.
That dark cabin is the computers losing their boot battery. Locks, iDrive, and Neutral all run on 12 volts. Without that small AGM, nothing electronic answers you.
What the warning on the screen actually means
BMW’s wording is usually close to this. Increased battery discharge when stationary, continued driving possible, replace battery. That line is doing real work. “Replace battery” means the 12-volt AGM, not the pack under the floor.
“Continued driving possible” is true while you’re moving. The high-voltage system keeps the 12-volt topped up on the road. The trap is the next time you park. A weak AGM can sag overnight in a garage. In the morning there’s no screen and no handle response. There’s also no way to select Neutral.
If the message just appeared, finish the trip you’re on. Then treat replacement as the next stop. Don’t file it as a someday errand. Once the car has already gone dark, you’re past a heads-up. The warning is now why you’re stuck.

Why SoFi and downtown parking bring this on
Event parking is a long sit with electronics still sipping power. iDrive, the alarm, the modem, and the sensors still draw current. They pull from the 12-volt while you’re in your seat. After a concert or a game in Inglewood, people walk back to a brick. The pack still has miles, but the 12-volt doesn’t.
SoFi’s garages are a common overnight hold. Inglewood sits in the South Bay, and those structures stay full late. Downtown Los Angeles does the same on a workday. You leave the i4 near the financial core, a courthouse, or campus around USC. Hours later the fob still makes a sound. The car still won’t wake.
Airport parking stretches the same failure over days. LAX terminal structures P1 through P7 offer Level 2 and DC fast charging. The Economy Parking garage has more than 4,000 stalls, including 514 active EV chargers. None of that boots a dead 12-volt. A traveler can leave an i4 for a week. They can return to a car that won’t start. Chargers in the garage don’t fix a 12-volt failure. That’s not an empty pack.
Inland heat ages a weak AGM faster. The San Fernando and San Gabriel Valleys run hotter than the coast. Antelope Valley summers and cold nights are harder still. We couldn’t confirm a published temperature where an i4 12-volt fails. Heat still shortens AGM life. A warning you ignored in a mild month can still catch you. It often becomes a no-start after a hot inland day.
Coastal sits in Santa Monica or Manhattan Beach are milder. They still drain the 12-volt if the car sits unused. A week without a maintainer is enough to strand many of these cars.
How to tell it’s the 12-volt, not the pack
A dead pack and a dead 12-volt look alike from the sidewalk. The checks are not the same.
If the last state of charge you saw was healthy, start with the 12-volt. A dark iDrive plus a recent high percentage is the giveaway. Doors that won’t pull electronically point there too. So does a trunk that won’t unlatch. A car that unlocks, then dies, is the 12-volt collapsing under load.
Warning lights that flicker before shutdown are the same sag. A car that wakes, then resets, can’t hold 12 volts once the computers boot.
If the pack is actually at zero, that’s another job. Independent operators can bring a 240-volt Level 2 source to the car. They use a native NACS plug, or a CCS or J1772 adapter for non-Tesla EVs. That boost typically adds 10 to 20 miles of range. That takes 15 to 30 minutes of charging. That’s charging time, never an arrival time. Don’t mix the two failures. Jumping the 12-volt won’t fill an empty pack. A Level 2 boost won’t boot a car whose 12-volt is already flat.

Get into the cabin before you hunt the battery
BMW didn’t put the i4’s 12-volt under the hood. It sits in the trunk, on the passenger side, behind the liner. You pull a panel to see the AGM. There’s no frunk and no front access.
The latch is the problem because trunk release is electronic. A dead 12-volt means the button and the fob won’t open it. Use the physical key blade inside the fob. It works in the driver’s door lock. That cylinder is mechanical. Once you’re in, fold the rear seatback. Reach the trunk from the cabin.
Try the fob up close first. Passive entry can fade before the battery is fully dead. A few inches from the handle sometimes still wakes the latch.
The iX keeps its 12-volt under the rear cargo floor, on the right. If the powered tailgate is silent, use the same key-blade path, then the seats.

Jump from the posts under the hood
The i4 has a dedicated positive jump post in the engine bay, and so does the iX. BMW put it there so you can revive the computers without opening the trunk.
The interior hood release is mechanical. It works with zero 12-volt power. Pull it, pop the hood, and look for a red cover. It’s near the firewall or fuse box on the driver’s side. That’s the positive terminal. For ground, use unpainted metal on a chassis rail or bracket. Don’t clamp to plastic covers or painted bodywork.
Connect a jump pack the usual way. Positive first, then the negative to chassis ground. Let it sit two to three minutes. Then try to wake the car. iDrive can take another 30 to 45 seconds to boot after the 12-volt comes back.

After it wakes, replace the 12-volt soon
A jump is a restart, not a repair. If the i4 dies again on the same outing, stop driving it. A 12-volt that can’t hold charge under parked load will strand you on the next sit.
Plan a replacement AGM, not another jump next week. BMW wants the new battery registered to the car’s battery management. That step uses ISTA or a compatible OBD tool. Skip it and the car may not charge the new unit the way it should. Confirm the current procedure with a BMW shop or a specialist who has the software. Freeway patrol and private-garage tows
A disabled i4 on a Los Angeles County freeway is still a disabled vehicle. California Vehicle Code 21718 generally bars stopping on a freeway. It makes an exception when the vehicle is disabled and you’ve summoned help. It also allows a stop to avoid injury or damage. Call for assistance and stay out of live lanes.
Other drivers must move over or slow for a stopped service vehicle with flashing lights. That’s CVC 21809, and it protects people working around you.
Metro Freeway Service Patrol is the free truck on congested freeways. It’s a joint program of Caltrans, CHP, and LA Metro. Published help includes gas, a radiator refill, a taped hose, and a tire change. They can also tow you at no charge to a CHP-chosen safe spot. The list doesn’t include a 12-volt jump. It doesn’t list mobile EV charging. Coverage is typically weekday peak hours. Some midday, weekend, and construction-zone coverage exists on busy corridors. Dial 511 and say Motorist Aid if you need FSP. For a dark i4, expect a tow to a safe location, not a BMW-style jump.
