If the screens stay black and the fob does nothing, think 12V. If it wakes, shows a healthy pack, and still won’t drive, that’s another problem. If it powers up and the pack reads near empty, you need traction energy. A 12V jump won’t add miles.
A weak 12V can also look half-alive. Locks work once, then they don’t. The cluster flickers. The car starts, then dies in the aisle. Treat those as the same battery.
Don’t keep pressing start. Don’t sit with the screens on, hoping it recovers. That extra drain makes a marginal 12V worse.
The battery is in the trunk
This is the Ioniq 6 detail that trips people. The Ioniq 5 keeps its 12V up front under the hood. The Ioniq 6 sedan keeps the 12V in the trunk on the driver’s side. It’s under the cargo trim. Open the trunk. Pull the floor liner on the left. That’s the battery.

The hood still opens. There’s no frunk to pack. Use the interior hood release. Look for the black fuse box on the driver’s side. Lift the red cap for the positive post. Pick a bare metal chassis bolt for ground. Don’t clamp the negative lead onto the trunk battery’s negative terminal.
Jumping an Ioniq 6 from the hood
You need a jump pack, or a second car and cables. Use the hood posts only.
- Pull the interior hood release and open the hood.
- Find the black fuse box cover on the driver’s side of the bay.
- Flip up the red cap so the positive post is visible.
- Clamp the red lead to that post.
- Find a clean, unpainted chassis bolt for ground.
- Clamp the black lead to that bolt, not the trunk negative.
- On a donor car, match positive to positive and negative to negative, then start the donor.
- Give the Ioniq 6 a couple of minutes to take a small charge.
- Press start. The boot can take a few extra seconds after a dead 12V.
If it starts, get it onto a charger before you run errands. One jump doesn’t rebuild a depleted AGM. If it dies again within the hour, the 12V needs replacement, not another jump.

Metro’s Freeway Service Patrol roams congested Los Angeles County freeways. It can help during the hours they publish. Dial 511 and say Motorist Aid. The published list is a gallon of gas, a radiator refill, a taped hose, and a tire change. It also tows a disabled vehicle free to a CHP-chosen safe spot. It doesn’t list mobile EV charging. It doesn’t list a 12V jump for an empty pack. FSP may tow a dark Ioniq 6 off the 10 or the 110. It won’t get a Level 2 boost from FSP based on what they publish.
California Vehicle Code 21718 generally bans stopping on a freeway. A disabled vehicle that has already summoned help is an exception. Stay in the car if you’re in a live lane and can’t reach a shoulder. California Vehicle Code 21809 is the move-over law. Other drivers must change lanes or slow when they see flashing lights on an emergency, tow, or Caltrans vehicle.
