It is the small 12-volt battery that powers the wake-up sequence. Until that battery can hold voltage, the car acts like a brick.

Two batteries, two different failures
The EQE has a large drive battery and a separate 12V AGM battery. The 12V is the one that actually brings the car online. It feeds the flush door handles, the MBUX screen, the ambient lighting, and the driver-assistance sensors. It also feeds the control units that connect the high-voltage pack to the motors.
When the 12V sags, those modules never finish their handshake. The car sits dead. The drive pack can still read 80 percent or more. Nothing is wrong with the motors. The low-voltage side just cannot complete startup.
That is why a full charge on the dash app does not save you. The app can still show pack percent from the last session. The car in front of you has no 12V left to boot. Why Valley heat and long parking kill the 12V
The EQE keeps a long list of modules partly awake while it sits. The connectivity gateway, radar and camera units, over-the-air update system, and MBUX electronics all draw a trickle. Park for two weeks without a drive and that trickle can pull the 12V below the start threshold.
Los Angeles County makes that worse in two specific ways. The San Fernando Valley and the San Gabriel Valley run hotter than the coast. A car sitting in Glendale, Burbank, or Calabasas soaks that heat all afternoon. Standby electronics keep cycling in a hot cabin. A battery that has never been load-tested fails first on those weeks.
The Westside is milder. Santa Monica and the beaches still get a marine layer. An EQE in a closed garage in Beverly Hills or West Hollywood can still sit too long between drives. Heat is not the only load. Time sitting still is enough if the 12V is already weak.
Home charging does not always protect you either. The 12V normally tops up from the drive pack through the DC-DC converter while the car is awake. If the EQE never wakes, that converter never runs. A driveway in the City of Los Angeles on LADWP, or an SCE or Clean Power Alliance address in Calabasas, does not change that. Utility programs help you install a Level 2 at home. They do not keep a sleeping 12V alive during a two-week trip.
Event lots, studio parking, and airport sits
Long event parking is the other local pattern. The EQE looks fine when you lock it. Hours later the 12V has dropped under the control-unit threshold.
Universal Studios Hollywood is a classic version of this. You park in the structure, stay for a full day, and return to a dark cabin. The same thing shows up after a SoFi Stadium event in Inglewood. Burbank studio lots produce it too. An EQE can sit through a long production day, then refuse Ready mode at night. Griffith Observatory parking is another long sit with a walk back to a silent car. Santa Anita in Arcadia can do it on a race day. None of these mean the drive pack emptied in the stall.
Airports are the slow version of the same failure. Los Angeles International has Level 2 and DC fast charging in terminal structures P1 through P7. The Economy Parking garage has hundreds of EV stalls too. That does not stop a 12V failure. A traveler who leaves an EQE for a week can return to a car that will not wake, even in a lot with chargers. A 12V failure is not an empty pack. Hollywood Burbank and Long Beach Airport see the same sit-then-dead pattern. Confirm charger details on each airport’s own parking pages before you plan around a stall.
Sepulveda Pass on the 405 is a different stress. The climb between the Westside and the Valley is a range hit on the drive pack, not a 12V event by itself. The 12V call on that corridor is usually a car that sat in Valley heat, then would not restart after a stop. The I-5 stretch through Santa Clarita and Stevenson Ranch is similar. People blame the Grapevine grade. The no-start in the lot is still the small battery.
What a dead EQE 12V looks like
The EQE does not give one single warning. How far the 12V has dropped changes what you see.
A fully flat 12V means a dark cabin, no exterior lights, and handles that will not extend. The fob will not open the car. You need the mechanical key blade in the fob, then a jump.
A partly dead 12V is sneakier. The screen boots part way, then freezes or shuts off before Ready. You may see a 12V vehicle electrical system warning, then the display dies. The car may unlock and still refuse to leave Park. Low-voltage modules cannot bridge to the high-voltage pack.
None of those screens mean the expensive drive battery has failed. They mean the small battery cannot deliver enough voltage to finish startup. Treat them as a 12V problem until a shop proves otherwise.
The battery is in the back. The jump points are up front.
This is the part that strands owners in a lot. The actual 12V battery is not under the hood. It sits in the rear, under a trunk floor panel. Replacing it means pulling the cargo liner and load floor. That is a workshop job, not a parking-lot swap. The powered tailgate may already be dead, which makes rear access worse.
You do not touch that rear battery for a jump. Mercedes puts dedicated jump terminals under the hood for this exact failure.
On the driver’s side of the engine bay there is a black plastic fuse and relay box. Lift the cover. Under a red protective cap is a marked positive terminal stud. That is your jump positive. For negative, use an unpainted metal bolt, bracket, or strut-tower ground on the chassis. Do not run the negative lead back to the rear battery.
In one line: the 12V lives under the trunk floor, and the terminals you jump are in the driver’s-side fuse box up front. Those are two different places. That is what trips people.

Checks to run before you call a tow
If you are standing next to the car, work through this in order.
First, see whether the doors respond. If they do not, slide the mechanical key blade out of the fob. Unlock the driver’s door by hand. Electronic handles will not help you with a flat 12V.
Second, look for any leftover 12V. A dome light, hazards, or a flicker on the screen means some voltage is still there. Total darkness means you need a jump, not a charger on the drive pack.
Third, pop the hood. The interior hood release near the driver’s door sill is a mechanical cable. It still works with the 12V dead.
Fourth, find the red-capped positive stud on the fuse box. Connect a jump pack or a donor vehicle in the standard order: positive to the EQE stud, positive to the donor, negative to the donor, negative to the EQE chassis ground. Wait two full minutes so the low-voltage side can recover. Then try to start.
Fifth, watch the boot. The display should wake, run its sequence, and enter Ready. If the EQE throws a 12V fault after the jump and will not clear it, the battery is failing inside. That needs replacement at a shop, not another jump in the same stall.

Do not keep cycling the start button with a dark screen. You are only deepening the drain. Do not assume a public stall will wake a dead 12V. The charge port and the onboard charger also need 12V to talk. A connected cable with no session is a common result of the same failure.
Once it starts, the 12V may still be done
After Ready mode, the DC-DC converter can recharge the 12V from the drive pack. That is why the car can feel fine on the drive home. It is also why a weak battery fools people. The converter masks the problem while you are moving. Park again for a few days and the EQE can die in the same driveway.
If the battery is old or has failed internally, it will not hold that charge. You will be dark again. Load-test it at the next service visit. Replacement on the EQE is not a curb job. The pack is under the trunk floor. Mercedes systems usually need the new battery registered with a compatible diagnostic tool. Get the jump first so the car can move. Then book a dealer or an independent EV specialist for the swap.
A mobile Level 2 boost is the other fork, and it is a different problem. If the 12V is healthy and the drive pack is actually at zero, jumping the 12V will not add range. An operator can then bring a 240-volt Level 2 source to the car. That typically adds 10 to 20 miles of range in 15 to 30 minutes of charging. That is charging time, not an arrival time. Why a tow is the last call, not the first
A dead 12V does not need a rollback if the jump works. Towing a heavy EQE through county traffic is slower, more expensive for you, and harder on the car if the shop is not set up for EV transport. Fix the wake-up battery in the lot when you can.
Metro Freeway Service Patrol roams congested LA County freeways for free. Caltrans, CHP, and LA Metro run it. Dial 511 and say Motorist Aid. Published help is a gallon of gas, a radiator refill, a taped hose, a tire change, and a free tow to a CHP-chosen safe spot. The list does not include mobile EV charging or out-of-charge battery help. A silent EQE on the 405 or the 5 is outside that published menu, other than the tow to a safe location.
If you are already on a freeway shoulder, you can stay there once you have summoned help. California Vehicle Code 21718 bans stopping on a freeway, with an exception for a disabled vehicle that has called for assistance. California Vehicle Code 21809 is the move-over law. Other drivers must change lanes or slow for a stopped service vehicle with lights. Put the hazards on if they still work. Stay out of traffic.
Private lots have their own tow rules under Vehicle Code 22658. Signage, written authorization, and a chance to recover the car before it leaves the lot all apply. Do not assume a stadium or studio garage will wait. Get the 12V jump going before a lot operator treats the EQE as abandoned.
CHP can still rotate a tow on a freeway if the car is obstructing traffic. That is a last resort for a 12V no-start, not the first call.
What to tell the operator
When you call, say it is a Mercedes EQE that will not wake. Say whether the screen is dark, whether the handles extend, and whether the fob works. Mention how long the car sat, Valley heat, an event lot, or an airport week. That is enough for the operator to bring jump gear for the underhood terminals instead of a high-voltage charger you do not need.
If the car is a CCS Mercedes rather than a Tesla, say that too. Operators in the network handle Tesla and every major EV brand. The EQE uses the same jump logic as the EQS. It does not use a Tesla NACS port for this 12V job.
